Scarlet Globemallow
Scarlet Globemallow, a single channel video, chronicles my encouragement of drought tolerant and drought resistant plants to grow in a yard in New Mexico. Using photographs used to identify various invasive weeds and volunteer plants, I illustrate my self-education to rejuvinate the native plants. After identifying and pulling various non-native plants such as Russian Thistle and Field Bindweed, the small patch of Scarlet Globemallow quadrupled in size the next year. At the end of that summer, I created phytograms from the leaves of the globemallow, which are animated in black and white in the last half of the video.
